One More Course — But Can Your Australian Study Story Continue the Way You Planned?

You have nearly finished your course.
There is a graduation date on the calendar, another qualification on your shortlist, and perhaps a conversation at home that starts with: “Once everything is settled, you can join me.”
Then you hear that the Student visa rules have changed.
Suddenly, choosing what to study next comes with other questions. Can you apply while you are still in Australia? Can your partner come with you? What happens to the plans you have already made?
From 2 October 2026, changes to Australia’s Student visa rules made those questions especially relevant. If further study is part of your plans, give the visa arrangements as much attention as the course itself.
The Course Offer Is Only One Part of the Plan
Imagine a student approaching graduation. They find another course, receive an offer and start organising their next semester.
Before paying the deposit, there is a question to answer: can they apply for their next Student visa from Australia?
Most temporary visa holders affected by the restrictions must now apply from outside Australia and be outside Australia when the visa is granted. Current Student visa holders seeking another Student visa are also affected unless an exemption applies.
A course offer can help you plan your education. Your ability to lodge a visa application in Australia needs its own assessment.
But I Am Already a Student Here
That detail matters, but it does not settle the question.
Home Affairs identifies circumstances in which current students may be able to apply again in Australia. These include needing up to 12 more months after the original course end date to complete the main course with the same provider, undertaking a PhD or school studies, certain government sponsorship, provider default, and qualifying course progression.
Progression has specific requirements. Moving to a higher Australian Qualifications Framework level may qualify, but completing a higher education course also requires the next course to be higher education delivered by a higher education provider.
Two students choosing further study may therefore need different application plans. Check the precise criteria and supporting evidence before relying on an exemption.

We Thought My Partner Could Join Later
For couples and families, this may be the most important conversation to have early.
There are two separate questions:
- Can family members be included when the Student visa application is lodged?
- Can family members join as subsequent entrants after the Student visa is granted?
Home Affairs says family members generally cannot be included in a new application unless an exemption applies. Its guidance identifies categories including PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, foreign government scholarship recipients, and eligible Pacific or ASEAN students. Existing families may also have transitional arrangements.
The Department states that family members cannot be added after a Student visa grant, with no exemptions to that rule. Where inclusion at application is permitted, the student and family members must be in the same location when lodging.
If your plan depends on living together, assess the family arrangements before committing to the study plan.
What If Your Plans Are Already Underway?
The changes do not affect your current Student visa. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when lodged.
Start by separating what you already hold from what you intend to apply for next. Gather your grant notice, application dates, course records and family visa details. Those documents provide a clearer starting point than a headline or someone else’s experience.
Before You Pay the Next Deposit
Put three questions beside your course shortlist:
- Where will I need to be when I apply and when the visa is granted?
- Does an exemption apply to my circumstances?
- How will the application affect my partner or children?
Answering these questions early gives you a practical basis for decisions about tuition, travel and family life.
